Danville’s Historic District Guidelines

HEATHER MCMAHON ARCHITECTURAL HISTORIAN/CITY OF DANVILLE,
DECEMBER 2025

The City of Danville has a rich history shaped by its tobacco industry, textile manufacturing, and role as a center of commerce. Its historic districts reflect this legacy through distinctive architecture and established neighborhoods that contribute to the city’s unique character.

The City of Danville partnered with HMAH to update its Architectural Review Design Guidelines, creating a comprehensive resource to guide exterior renovations, new construction, and preservation efforts within the city’s historic districts. Developed in collaboration with EPR P.C., Inc. and Afton Design Co., the guidelines help property owners and design professionals navigate architectural standards while preserving Danville’s distinctive character.

Highlights include:

  • Accessible, easy-to-navigate, photo-forward layouts that make complex guidelines approachable for property owners and design professionals.

  • Custom diagrams and maps to communicate architectural standards, historic district boundaries, and design concepts clearly.

  • Layout and design that aligns with Danville’s visual identity while maintaining a cohesive, professional look.
